Ethylene oxide is detected in more and more food products!

In the recent past, numerous products containing sesame seeds, locust bean gum, xanthan gum and thickeners were recalled from the market because the maximum residue levels for ethylene oxide were exceeded.

In the EU, food business operators are responsible for having their products tested for residues as part of their own inspections. According to Regulation (EC) No. 396/2005, the maximum residue levels are between 0.01 and 0.1 mg/kg, depending on the matrix.

Currently, ethylene oxide is detected in many other product categories, such as vegan cheese, instant noodles and food supplements, which must be immediately removed from the market.

Food business operators are responsible for the safety of their products and are required to have their products tested. If maximum residue levels are exceeded, appropriate measures must be taken, such as removing the product from the market. In addition, the responsible authorities must be informed, who will check the measures and their success.
