We are shocked! – Dark chocolates tested

They say chocolate makes you happy – but only if it is safe and of good quality!

24 different dark chocolates have been tested recently, but not all of them were found to be good. According to the Cocoa and Chocolate Products Regulation, chocolate is defined as a product containing at least 43% total dry cocoa solids and at least 26% cocoa butter. In the case of dark chocolate, the cocoa content is higher and the percentage of cocoa in the tested chocolates is between 60 and 75%.

 

Mineral oils found in dark chocolates

 

In some varieties the mineral oils MOSH and MOAH have been found. Mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOAH) can get into food in various ways, such as through the packaging material or the manufacturing process, and they can have mutagenic and carcinogenic effects.

 

Cadmium contents are below the maximum level in all samples

 

According to Regulation (EU) No. 488/2014, the cadmium content in a dark chocolate may not exceed 0.80 mg/kg since 01.01.2019. The cadmium level was below the maximum level in all tested chocolates. However, regular monitoring of the cadmium concentration in dark chocolate is very important, as cadmium is harmful to the kidneys and, due to volcanic soils, can be absorbed by cocoa plants and enriched in the beans.

The taste of dark chocolate is of course an important purchase criteria. Dark chocolate can have a slight citrus, espresso, vanilla or blackcurrant flavour and a flowery smell.
