How well are cats supplied with complete food?

In German households there are about 14.7 million cats that want to be well cared for. But how healthy and nutritious are complete wet feeds on the market?

Without harmful substances

In a test 30 varieties of complete feed for cats were examined. In none of them harmful substances such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury or bisphenol A were found in critical amounts.

Wrong mix of nutrients

Complete feed must provide the pets with all important nutrients for a healthy life. That means it has to provide a good mixture of proteins, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids.

In the tested varieties, too high concentrations of phosphorus, sodium or calcium were often found. Too high concentrations of water-soluble inorganic phosphorus are excreted in the urine and pose a health risk to the kidneys of the cats.

Furthermore, the manufacturer must ensure that there is enough iodine in the feed, which was not always the norm. A too small amount of iodine can lead to an underactive thyroid, especially for older cats.
