4 tips for handling food at home

In recent months, people people spent more time at home due to the corona pandemic.  Going to the canteen or out for lunch is often cancelled and everyone cooks more for themselves and their families. However, incorrect handling of food can lead to food infections.

What is a food infection?

Food infections are diseases caused by eating contaminated food. The reason can be bacteria, viruses, parasites or toxins. The most common symptoms include sickness, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea.

What should you pay attention to when handling food at home?

  1. Prevent cross-contaminations! I.e. prevent microorganisms from being transferred from mostly raw food to other food. The transfer can happen by direct contact of the food or by indirect contact through surfaces, utensils and hands. Accordingly, utensils and surfaces that have been in contact with raw food should always be cleaned properly and hands should also be washed carefully after contact.
  2. Cool food correctly! Insufficient cooling promotes the growth of microorganisms. Therefore, it must be ensured that the chilled food is kept cool from the supermarket to your home.
  3. Heat correctly! Insufficient heating, reheating and also too slow cooling of prepared food can lead to food infections.
  4. Observe date of use! Food that is easily perishable has a use-by date, i.e. the product should not be consumed after this date as this could pose a health hazard.
